After 13 hours of work (including food breaks and being a mommy) I did my own knotless box braids. Knotless box braids are individual braids that leaves a little of your hair out at the root before adding in the braiding hair. Contrary to box braids that adds the braiding hair at the root encapsulating all of the hair.
Why is this a big deal? Well, for some, wearing braids and changing up their hair is not even a thought- but for me it is for multiple reasons. One being, I’ve never worn individual braids before or color in my hair-besides jet black. The fact that I wanted to try both at the same time was wild for me. Second, I was afriad I would not look right with them. Why? I don’t know. Changing my hair meant getting out of my comfort zone and perception of myself. I never felt like I could wear my hair in different styles because…well of my life style and social circles.
I finally reached a point to step outside of my normal. One evening I decided I was going to do it and went to the beauty supply store to purchase:
1. 2 packs of pre-strechted hair (the hair comes with 3 bundles of hair in each pack) I used the colors 1b & 2/27/30
2. Shine n’ Jam
3. Rat tail comb
4. Ginormous Bonnet
Everything came to $24.12! So let’s say I saved $200! However, I would pay that amount for the service because baaaaaaby the time it took. Plus I’m at the age where I’ll pay for convince…Ijs.
Anywho, on my way into the store I thought “no I probably shouldn’t do color, I’ll just start out with 1b” (which is closet to my natural hair color). After I got in the store and found my Shine n’ Jam and the associate points me to the hair and says “you should do color”. His comment surprised me and made me realize it was my confirmation to just go for it. I said, “Before I walked in I was thinking about adding some color but decided against it”. “He said “don’t be chicken” as he moves his arms in the motion of a chicken. I said “what the heck! Let’s do it”. Before, I was just afraid of doing something different and how it would be perceived. I am so happy I went with my first mind because God knew how much I would love it and I DO! I feel liberated.
So much so I ended up doing the crown of my hair using mostly the colored hair. I have always played it safe but I am tired of always coloring inside the lines. I am ready to try more hairstyles after this.-say a perm rod set? Hmmm decisions. So lets get into the details of these knotless box braids.
The Weight Of It All
They are not heavy at all. At first I was worried about the weight of the hair and the amount of tension the braids would put on my hair. Rest assured it’s not heavy nor am I concerned now about the tension anymore.
Versatility
Knotless box braids are EXTREMELY versatile. I can style my hair 1 million ways from laid back to professional, you can do it all.
Conclusion
Go get you some braids girl…and add a lil color if you want to! Phuck what people think and say and do what feels right for you.
